RECOMMENDATIONS FOR A SUCCESSFUL CULTIVATION
Location | Richer soils at locations suitable for durum cultivation with warm and dry summers, viticultural climate, or regions where grain maize is cultivated. |
Crop rotation | Optimal preceding crops are foliage plants like rape or legumes. Sugar beet is limitedly suitable and maize and winter wheat are to be avoided. |
Sowing time | Beginning of October until beginning of November |
Seeding | Sowing time and sowing rate: |
Early sowing: 360 - 400 grains/m²
Late sowing: 380 - 420 grains/m²
Increasing the sowing rate by ca. 10 % on the basis of organic production methods (e.g. harrowing) should be carried out at own discretion.
Weed control | Cultivation should only be carried out on parcels with low weed pressure. When it comes to the cultivation of durum wheat repeated harrowing at the 3- or 4-leaf-stage during pre- and post- emergence is imperative. Another option would be the cultivation with a certain distance between the rows (e.g. 25 cm) that allows hoeing at 4-leaf-stage. |
