RECOMMENDATIONS FOR A SUCCESSFUL CULTIVATION
| Location | Richer soils at locations suitable for durum cultivation with warm and dry summers, viticultural climate, or regions where grain maize is cultivated. |
| Crop rotation | Grass clover or lucerne grass are the optimal preceding crops, maize and cereals are to be avoided. |
| Sowing time | Beginning of October until beginning of November |
| Seeding | Sowing time and sowing rate: |
| Early sowing: 370 - 410 grains/m² | |
| Late sowing: 390 - 430 grains/m² | |
| Increasing the sowing rate by ca. 10 % on the basis of organic production methods (e.g. harrowing) should be carried out at own discretion. | |
| Weed control | Cultivation should preferably be carried out on parcels with low weed pressure. When it comes to the cultivation of durum wheat repeated harrowing at the 2- or 3-leaf-stage during pre- and post- emergence is imperative. Another option would be the cultivation with a certain distance between the rows (e.g. 25 cm) that allows hoeing at 3-leaf-stage. |
